Ibom Air Expands in Nigerian Aviation with Reliable Service, New Uyo Terminal, & Africa-wide Expansion

by Oluwafemi Kehinde

Ibom Air is emerging as a game-changer in Nigerian aviation industry, forging its path by making service reliability the core of its growth strategy. At a recent travel agent forum held in Lagos, CEO George Uriesi unveiled the airline’s vision to prioritise consistent, dependable service and targeted partnerships over rapid, unchecked expansion.

According to Travel News Africa, Uriesi articulated Ibom Air’s methodical approach, contrasting the airline’s strategy with those of competitors that, despite having similar fleet sizes, chase twice the number of destinations. With nine aircraft currently serving seven routes, Ibom Air is carefully consolidating its network, ensuring a superior service experience before exploring new markets.

Ibom Air Expands in Nigerian Aviation with Reliable Service, New Uyo Terminal, & Africa-wide ExpansionThis focused approach addresses the real-world challenges of maintaining stellar on-time performance in Nigeria’s rapidly evolving aviation environment, which is often impacted by unpredictable weather and technical obstacles. Notably, Ibom Air boasts a stellar 97% on-time performance for morning flights—a critical success metric highlighted by Uriesi.

According to Travel Port, central to Ibom Air’s ambitious plans is its newly launched terminal in Uyo, hailed by Uriesi as “the best in the country.” This advanced facility has been designed to facilitate smooth domestic and international connections, reinforcing Ibom Air’s standing as a leader in regional travel. Passengers will benefit from features such as automated check-in kiosks, biometric security screening, and luxurious lounges, all of which elevate the travel experience and raise the bar for airport standards across Nigeria.

Aviation Week reports that the airline is set to expand to underserved destinations in Central and West Africa, including Malabo, Libreville, and São Tomé. These new routes will not only link less accessible cities but also strengthen Nigeria’s role as an emerging transit hub for the region. Uriesi is confident that the combination of a world-class terminal and an unyielding focus on service quality will spark positive word-of-mouth, fueling robust demand and sustainable growth.

Recognising travel agents as crucial partners, Uriesi emphasised the mutually beneficial relationship that underpins Ibom Air’s success. In just six months, bookings from travel agents have surged to contribute 6% of the airline’s revenue—a number expected to hit 12% by year’s end, with an ambitious long-term target of 50%. Given Ibom Air’s projected 2025 revenue of exceeding ₦150 billion, travel agents are expected to earn between ₦9 billion and ₦18 billion, with the potential to reach ₦75 billion if partnership targets are met.

Backed by reliability, strategic expansion, and solid travel-focused partnerships, Ibom Air is poised for sustained success. Its emphasis on service excellence and investment in premium infrastructure promise lucrative opportunities for travellers, positioning Ibom Air as a rising force in African aviation.

Ibom Air’s ambitious, multi-pronged strategy, centred on a “Reliability-First” growth model, the development of a state-of-the-art terminal in Uyo, and the expansion into new African routes, is set to bolster Nigeria’s aviation tourism significantly. These initiatives are poised to enhance the country’s connectivity, improve the travel experience, and attract a new wave of both leisure and business travellers.

A cornerstone of Ibom Air’s strategy is its unwavering commitment to on-time performance and reliability, a factor that has already earned the airline accolades and a loyal customer base. This focus directly addresses a significant challenge in Nigeria’s aviation industry and is expected to have a profound impact on the country’s tourism sector.

For tourists, predictable flight schedules are essential for planning itineraries and maximising their time in the country. By prioritising reliability, Ibom Air is fostering a sense of trust and confidence among travellers, which is likely to encourage repeat visits and positive word-of-mouth recommendations.

Furthermore, the airline’s plan to join the Global Distribution System (GDS) by October 2025 will enhance its visibility and accessibility to international travel agents and tourists, making it easier to book multi-leg journeys that include Nigeria. This move is anticipated to attract more international tourists and tour operators who may have been deterred by the unpredictability of air travel within the country.

The construction of a new, cutting-edge terminal at the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo is another pivotal element of Ibom Air’s strategic vision. Described as a “hub terminal,” it is designed to facilitate seamless transfers between domestic and international flights —a feature currently lacking in many Nigerian airports.

Ibom Air’s strategic expansion into new African routes is set to be a game-changer for intra-continental tourism. The airline has already commenced flights to Accra, Ghana, and has announced plans to connect Uyo with Malabo in Equatorial Guinea, Douala in Cameroon, and São Tomé and Príncipe. There are also ambitious plans to expand to seven African countries shortly.

These new routes will directly increase the flow of tourists and business travellers between Nigeria and these nations. They will also open up opportunities for multi-destination tourism packages, allowing travellers to easily explore different parts of West and Central Africa with Nigeria as a central point.

The economic benefits of these new air links are substantial, as they will stimulate trade, investment, and cross-cultural exchange. For Nigeria’s tourism sector, it means greater access to a previously untapped market of African travellers, who may be drawn to the country’s diverse cultural heritage, natural attractions, and business opportunities.
