The Ghanaian government announced an unprecedented surge in the country’s tourism sector revenue on June 10, reaffirming Ghana’s status as a leading travel destination in Africa. The newly released 2024 Ghana Tourism Report, titled “Growth and Stability,” showcases a record-breaking year of performance and unveils substantial opportunities for travel agents across the globe.

International arrivals in 2024 reached 1.288 million, a 12% increase from the previous year, resulting in a remarkable $4.8 billion in revenue. Key markets, including the United States, Nigeria, and the United Kingdom, primarily drove this impressive growth. Notably, Nigeria saw a 25% rise in visitors, underscoring Ghana’s strong appeal within West Africa and to the African diaspora. Visitors are consistently drawn to Ghana’s rich blend of culture, heritage, and warm hospitality, from the vibrant cityscape of Accra to the profound historical sites of Cape Coast and Elmina.

The renowned December in GH festival, a unique fusion of music, fashion, and heritage, remains a major draw. Attendees stay an average of 22 nights and spend over $700 per day, reinforcing Ghana’s status as a premium destination for both heritage and leisure travellers.

Domestic tourism also thrived, with 1.68 million site visits recorded, a 19% increase. Popular attractions include the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, Kakum National Park, and Bunso Arboretum. This boom has significantly boosted the national economy, particularly the hospitality sector, which now boasts 6,702 licensed tourism enterprises, up from 5,786 in 2023. Strong hotel occupancy rates and an average tourist expenditure of $3,742 further reflect increasing confidence in Ghana’s diverse offerings.
