Botswana to Host AviaDev 2026 as the Revival of Tourism in Africa Surges

by Oluwafemi Kehinde

Botswana has secured the prestigious opportunity of hosting the AviaDev Africa conference in 2026, positioning itself as a burgeoning aviation hub on the continent. According to Atta Travel, the announcement was made at the closing ceremony of the 2025 AviaDev event in Zanzibar.

AviaDev Africa is renowned for bringing together airlines, airports, tourism boards, and investors to foster collaboration and stimulate route development. The event plays a crucial role in enhancing intra-African air connectivity, which in turn drives trade, tourism, and investment.

Botswana to Host AviaDev 2026 as the Revival of Tourism in Africa SurgesDr. Bao Mosinyi, CEO of the Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB), underscored the transformative impact of improved connectivity. He cited research indicating that a 10% increase in air connectivity can boost a country’s GDP by 1%, fuelling economic growth, job creation, and increased investment. This ripple effect is expected to benefit the entire tourism ecosystem, including travel agencies.

Dr. Mosinyi also emphasised the critical role of air connectivity in driving economic transformation. He advocated for policies that facilitate easier access to Botswana, such as a visa-on-arrival for African nationals, echoing a key theme from the 2025 conference: dismantling travel barriers, including restrictive visa regimes, to promote seamless intra-African movement.

According to Travel and Tour World, Botswana’s successful bid was the result of a concerted effort by CAAB, Botswana Air Access, the Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO), the Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC), and other key partners. Their joint proposal highlighted Botswana’s logistical capabilities and strategic vision.

Jon Howell, CEO of AviaDev, praised Botswana’s readiness, ambition, and cooperative approach, emphasising the competitive nature of the selection process. Hosting AviaDev 2026 aligns seamlessly with Botswana’s broader goals of economic diversification and regional integration.

Significant upgrades to Botswana’s aviation infrastructure have been made, with all major international airports achieving ICAO certification and a strong safety rating of 85.78%. The focus now shifts to expanding connectivity by attracting major global carriers, such as Qatar Airways and Emirates, and developing a broader network of regional and continental routes.

The 2026 AviaDev conference is expected to stimulate private sector growth by engaging entrepreneurs, hoteliers, SMEs, and tourism operators. AviaDev Africa serves as a specialised platform dedicated to enhancing air connectivity across the continent. Through pre-arranged meetings, presentations, and panel discussions, it connects key decision-makers.

As Botswana prepares to host AviaDev 2026, it is not just organising an event but spearheading a continental dialogue on how improved air access can drive inclusive progress and prosperity.

Botswana’s hosting of AviaDev Africa 2026, the continent’s premier aviation route development conference, is a significant event that is expected to have a multi-faceted impact on Africa’s and, by extension, Nigeria’s travel and tourism sector.

The primary goal of AviaDev is to facilitate new air routes and increase flight frequencies across Africa. This means more direct flights between African cities, reducing travel time and costs, and making intra-African travel more accessible.

By extension, better connectivity will make it easier for tourists from around the world and within Africa to reach various destinations, including Botswana’s renowned wildlife reserves (Okavango Delta, Chobe National Park) and other African attractions.

Another offshoot of the improved air links AviaDev affords is the facilitation of trade and investment across the continent. This can lead to broader economic growth, indirectly benefiting the tourism sector. The conference will also highlight the immense potential of the African aviation market, attracting global attention and leading to further investment in aviation infrastructure and services across the continent.

While the direct benefits will be felt most by Botswana, Nigeria stands to gain indirectly and potentially directly from the outcomes of AviaDev Africa 2026. If AviaDev 2026 leads to the establishment of new or more frequent routes between Southern African hubs (like Gaborone or Johannesburg) and West African hubs (like Lagos), it could significantly improve travel ease for Nigerians wishing to visit Southern Africa for tourism or business, and vice versa.

Nigerian aviation and tourism stakeholders attending AviaDev 2026 will have the opportunity to learn from international and regional best practices in route development, airport management, and tourism marketing. This knowledge can be applied to improve Nigeria’s own aviation and tourism sectors.

The spotlight on African aviation and tourism at AviaDev 2026 could attract more international investors looking for opportunities across the continent. This could lead to increased investment in Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure, airlines, and tourism development projects.

As a major economy and population centre, Nigeria is a significant player in African travel. Better overall African connectivity will benefit Nigerian airlines and airports, potentially increasing their regional reach and competitiveness.

Nigerian tourism stakeholders can also utilise the platform to network and form partnerships with airlines, tour operators, and tourism boards from other African countries, thereby promoting Nigeria as a viable tourism destination.

While not directly hosting, a general boost in intra-African tourism and improved air access across the continent could indirectly lead to more international tourists considering multi-country African itineraries that include Nigeria.

Nigeria’s tourism sector is projected to experience significant growth, with the WTTC forecasting a contribution of N11.2 trillion (approximately $7.5 billion) to Nigeria’s GDP by 2025. Events like AviaDev contribute to the overall positive sentiment and growth in the African travel space, which can benefit Nigeria’s trajectory.
