Cross River Tourism Board Says State Is Fully Prepared for Carnival Calabar

by Familugba Victor

As the excitement builds for one of Africa’s most anticipated cultural events, the Cross River Tourism Bureau (CRSTB) has officially confirmed that the state is fully primed to host the 2025 Carnival Calabar. This year’s edition holds special significance as it marks a significant milestone: two decades of consistent cultural excellence.

In a comprehensive statement issued on December 15, Mr. Ojoi Ekpenyong, the Managing Director of the CRSTB, assured all stakeholders, from international tourists to local vendors, that the logistics are in place for a seamless experience. The bureau has orchestrated a massive overhaul of the state’s tourism ecosystem, focusing on expanded hotel capacity, enhanced aviation connectivity, robust security architecture, and upgraded urban infrastructure.

The Carnival, widely celebrated as “Nigeria’s Biggest Street Party,” draws thousands of visitors annually and serves as the flagship event of the state’s tourism calendar. The festivities are designed to create a ripple effect of tourism activity, spilling over into major attractions such as the iconic Obudu Mountain Resort.

Emphasising the historical weight of this year’s event, Ekpenyong stated:

“Note that the government and people of Cross River are celebrating 20 years of sustaining an international brand, the Carnival Calabar and Festival.”

To ensure that getting to Calabar is as effortless as possible, the state government has taken decisive action regarding air travel. Through the state-owned carrier, CallyAir, air connectivity has been significantly strengthened with the strategic acquisition of two new aircraft. This move is specifically aimed at mitigating the travel bottlenecks often experienced during the December rush.

On the hospitality front, the bureau reported that approximately 4,000 hotel rooms have been prepared to accommodate the influx of guests. Moving beyond mere capacity, the government has also approved grants to assist hotel owners and hospitality facilities in renovating and “cleaning up” their establishments to ensure they meet global standards.

The city of Calabar itself has transformed. Extensive investments have been made in urban renewal and beautification projects. This includes the installation of early festive lighting along major transit routes and the unveiling of one of Nigeria’s tallest Christmas light towers, creating a vibrant visual spectacle for evening revellers.

Ekpenyong highlighted the tangible changes visitors will see: “So, the government is ready, and the people are ready; our roads are wearing new looks with asphalt. There is an introduction of VIP seats for our visitors during the biggest street party and the opening of the cinema this month at the Calabar Marina Resort.”

Security remains a non-negotiable priority. The MD assured tourists that the state government has deployed a comprehensive security strategy to cover the period before, during, and after the carnival.

While the main events draw near, the celebration is already underway. Ekpenyong noted that the state’s version of “Detty December” officially kicked off on November 1st at the Christmas Village. The festivities will continue across multiple locations throughout the city, culminating in the grand finale of Carnival Calabar on December 29.
