1.2K Akwa Ibom State Government has unveiled plans to diversify its economy by investing in tourism, which would create jobs and boost revenue. This was announced by the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Anieti Nsewo Udofia, in the state capital on April 18, World Heritage Day, themed “Heritage Under Threat From Disaster and Conflict.” Godswill Akpabio International Stadium Udofia revealed that the state adopted a local theme, “Cultural Heritage and Economic Development: Optimising the Tourism Component of the ARISE Agenda,” which aligns with Governor Umo Eno’s development blueprint. He stated: “The ARISE Agenda, spearheaded by our visionary Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, Ph.D., recognises the critical role of culture and tourism in driving economic growth and development and is taking bold steps toward repositioning tourism in Akwa Ibom.” The commissioner highlighted achievements, including the completion of ARISE Park, the International Conference Centre, ongoing maintenance of sports facilities, and upgrades to the Ibom Hotel. He urged documentation to preserve these assets, stating, “Not much has been written on our culture even though our cultural artefacts are all over the world in different museums.” Ekpuk also recommended reviving the raffia industry in Ikot Ekpene as a tourism driver. Anieti noted that investing in tourism offers the state a range of economic benefits, such as job creation, revenue generation, infrastructure development, and cultural preservation. Tourism development leads to employment opportunities in hospitality, transportation, and local businesses. It will also increase the state’s revenue through taxes, fees, and spending on accommodations, attractions, and services. He added that investments in tourism encourage improvements in roads, hotels, and recreational facilities, benefiting residents and visitors alike. This helps showcase Akwa Ibom’s heritage, festivals, and traditions, strengthening cultural identity while attracting tourists. Small businesses thrive as local crafts, food, and services demand increases. The state is positioning itself as a tourism hub, with projects like the ARISE Resort and Ibom Tropicana Hotel expected to generate significant revenue.
