The yearly coronation has become an annual ritual for the Itsekiri people to honour their revered kings. Therefore, the first coronation of the kingdom’s youngest monarch to the throne was eagerly awaited by all sons and daughters of the Iwere kingdom, at home and in diaspora, as the excitement and planning for the occasion began much earlier.

Undoubtedly, the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, is an innovative, sophisticated, and cultured man. His apparent discipline and Christian leaning complement these on his ascension to his forefathers’ throne on August 21, 2021, the young monarch dedicated the country to God while assuring the youth that he would be a partner in their progress on the day of his coronation. Since his coronation, the monarch has brought sweeping changes to the kingdom by bringing it into touch with the twenty-first century through numerous innovations.

Though the coronation is still vivid in many people’s thoughts, it was over a year ago. According to Society Plus, the first-class king intends to honour his first year on the throne spectacularly.

The palace said, “The anniversary will be celebrated for five days, from August 17 to August 21, 2022.” The festivities will begin with ‘Praise Day’ events, including a gratitude service in the palace’s main church auditorium.

The “Warri Food Festival followed this,” His Majesty’s new concept to demonstrate various food products and techniques of cooking and presenting them and to display the varied colours and delectable flavours of Itsekiri cuisine. In addition, the Iwere Music Concert and the founding of the Iwere Royal Society will take place on the same day.

“Friday, August 19, was designated Health Day, and His Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III provided different healthcare services to the people at the Palace of the Great Chief Nana Olomu, the famous merchant trader of the Niger Delta.”

On August 20, activities shifted to Ode Itsekiri, the Iwere Kingdom’s headquarters, where Itsekiri toke turns to pay homage to their revered monarch amid cultural displays, traditional dances, drumming, singing, and an exhibition of Itsekiri arts and history. Also, a collection of family heirlooms by various Itsekiri nobles in a joyous and exciting atmosphere.

On August 21, the actual coronation anniversary of the monarch, a thanksgiving ceremony will be held within the church at Aghofen, the Palace of the Olu of Wari on the Warri mainland.
