Africa’s Tourism Triumph: 81M Visitors Fuel Global Rebound in 2025

by Familugba Victor

The global travel landscape has officially shifted from recovery mode to growth mode. According to the latest data from the World Tourism Barometer, international tourism has regained its pre-pandemic momentum, mirroring the steady 5% annual growth average that defined the decade between 2009 and 2019.

Businessday.ng reported on January 25 that the resurgence is being driven by a combination of pent-up demand, enhanced air connectivity, and significant improvements in visa facilitation. Despite economic headwinds, travellers are prioritising international experiences, signalling a robust return to form for the global hospitality sector.

While the recovery is visible worldwide, Africa emerged as the standout performer of 2025. The continent saw an 8 percent increase in arrivals compared to the previous year, with North Africa leading the way at an 11 percent growth rate.

Equally impressive is the Middle East, which has not only recovered but surpassed its previous records. With nearly 100 million international visitors in 2025, the region’s arrivals stood at 39 percent above 2019 levels, the strongest result relative to pre-pandemic benchmarks of any global region.

Europe Remains the Global Anchor

Europe continues to hold its title as the world’s most visited destination. In 2025, the region welcomed 793 million international tourists, representing a 6% increase over 2019 figures.

  •  Western Europe saw a 5% uptick.
  • Southern Mediterranean Europe grew by 3 per cent.
  • Central and Eastern Europe showed a resilient 6% rebound from the previous year, though it remains 9% below its 2019 peak.

The Americas recorded a modest 1% growth in 2025, though the narrative varied by subregion. South America (+7%) and Central America (+5%) performed strongly, but the overall average was tempered by weaker results in the United States and the impact of Hurricane Melissa, which stalled growth in parts of the Caribbean during the fourth quarter.

Asia and the Pacific continue to experience growth. While arrivals remain 9% below 2019 levels, the region saw a 6% growth in 2025. North-East Asia, in particular, is accelerating with a 13% growth rate over 2024.

Shaikha Alnuwais, secretary-general, UN Tourism, said: “Demand for travel remained high throughout 2025, despite high inflation in tourism services and uncertainty from geopolitical tensions. We expect this positive trend to continue into 2026 as the global economy is expected to remain steady and destinations still lagging behind pre-pandemic levels fully recover.”

The data suggests that the lagging regions, specifically parts of Asia and Eastern Europe, are poised for a full recovery by the end of 2026. As visa processes become more streamlined and the global economy stabilises, the tourism sector is expected to enter a period of sustained, predictable expansion.
