Ghana’s passport looks weak from Brussels and strong from Lusaka. The 2026 Ghana passport ranking places the document 123rd worldwide, yet 14th among 54 African countries, and holders can enter 71.7% of African destinations without arranging a visa in advance. 

Passport Reports gives Ghana a Mobility Score of 72 and a global access rate of 36.4%. That score combines 42 visa-free destinations, 26 visa-on-arrival or simplified-entry destinations and four eTA destinations. Another 126 destinations demand a visa before departure.

Inside Africa, the picture sharpens. Ghanaians enter 25 African countries visa-free, 10 more on arrival or under simplified rules, and three through eTA. Only 15 African destinations require a visa. Beyond the continent, the Caribbean leads with 81.3% access, ahead of Oceania at 50.0% and North America at 47.8%. Europe and the six Gulf states register 0.0%.

The trend line worries. Ghana’s Mobility Score climbed from 59 in 2020 to 76 in 2025, then fell to 72 in 2026, while its global rank slid from 114th to 123rd. Passport Reports offers no cause for the drop. Method matters too: the Henley Passport Index, which draws on IATA data, placed Ghana 69th in early 2026.

The continental score has its authors. ECOWAS free-movement rules and bilateral deals carried it, and Ghana’s own openness helped: the African Development Bank’s 2025 Africa Visa Openness Index ranked Ghana fifth on the continent for welcoming fellow Africans. South Africa shows what one agreement can do. After a Ghana-South Africa visa waiver began in November 2023, Ghanaian arrivals in South Africa jumped 149% to 36,656 in 2024, and South African officials credited the waiver, along with added flights.

Angola, Algeria, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates ease entry into Ghana, yet Ghanaians need a visa for all four. Bangladesh, the Philippines, India, Jordan and Vietnam do the reverse: their citizens need a visa for Ghana, while Ghanaians enter under simpler terms.

Trip design starts with stay limits. Barbados and Dominica allow up to 180 days, and Fiji and Vanuatu allow 120. Kenya, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, the Bahamas and Mauritius cap stays at 90 days, which suits longer leisure trips, cultural tourism and extended business visits. Read the fine print, though. Cabo Verde runs the EASE process, Singapore requires an arrival card for its 30-day entry, and Seychelles pairs an eTA with tourist registration. India, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Gabon, Madagascar and Vietnam sell visas on arrival but also offer eVisas that save queue time.

For tour operators and ground handlers, the takeaway is practical. Pitch East and Southern African circuits to Ghanaian clients first, because Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe all admit them without a visa. Start visa support early for European and Gulf bookings: all 47 European destinations and all six Gulf states require one in advance. Destinations that still lock Ghanaians out should treat the reciprocity list as a to-do list, since Angola, Algeria and Egypt each have an obvious bilateral deal within reach.
