Expert Urges Government to Boost Security for Yuletide Tourism & Nightlife Economy

by Familugba Victor

As the festive season approaches, governments at all levels have been tasked with prioritising the creation of a peaceful and secure environment to allow tourism and the nighttime economy to thrive. Smith Oziegbe Oseghale, the Chief Executive of 16: Xisten Events, issued the call on November 22 in a statement from Abuja.

Oseghale, a leading figure in the event production industry, stressed that the security of lives and property is the bedrock of a successful festive season. He noted that the “Yuletide” period, often characterised by the return of the diaspora and a surge in domestic travel, offers a unique opportunity. There is a significant opportunity for economic growth if the environment supports nightlife and entertainment.

While commending the current efforts of the government and security agencies in combating crime, the 16: Xisten Events CEO argued that security strategies must be intensified to guarantee a crime-free society.

“Nigeria has the potential to replicate, and even surpass, the tourism successes of leading African destinations like Rwanda, Kenya, and South Africa, where the sector contributes significantly to the GDP. However, this requires a deliberate effort to make our cities safe for tourists to explore freely, day and night.” Oseghale stated.

Oseghale also advocated a significant shift in how corporate organisations approach brand financing. He urged major brands to look beyond the traditional hubs of Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Abuja, calling for an “open playing field” for professionals nationwide.

“There are vibrant, untapped markets in places like Edo and Delta States. “By decentralising sponsorships, we not only grow the industry but also stimulate local economies,” he added.

Demonstrating his commitment to regional development, Oseghale revealed that 16 Xisten Events has curated a robust lineup of shows scheduled through December 2025. These events are designed to boost local tourism in the South-South region. Examples of these events include Maleke Unchained, set to be held in Benin City, Edo State. Medica Live (Story So Far) is also scheduled to take place in the Edo State capital, while Mc Hilarious: The Agbor Invasion will be held in Agbor, Delta State. Agbor, Delta State, will host The Agbor Invasion (Talking From Experience), a major comedy show.

Oseghale brings a different type of academic discipline and international exposure to the entertainment sector. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, and a master’s degree in environmental toxicology from the University of Benin.

Reflecting on his recent international engagements, he shared insights from his tour of the United Kingdom, during which he served as the road manager for Pluto Live. The tour covered five major cities: Leeds, Birmingham, Nottingham, Wolverhampton, and London, and was followed by the Comedy and Music Special for MC Medica in Wolverhampton and Blackpool.

He noted that the organisational structure he saw in the UK is what his company aims to replicate in Nigeria, ensuring that loyal clients, both domestic and international, receive world-class entertainment experiences.
