Ondo State Sets Sights on Tourism Boom, Promises to Unlock Ecotourism Treasures

Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has reiterated Ondo State’s unwavering commitment to revitalising its tourism industry, aiming to position the state as a premier destination for travellers across Nigeria and beyond.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 9th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Nigeria Association of Tour Operators (NATOP), held on June 11 in Akure, Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, represented by his deputy, Chief Olayide Adelami, emphasised Ondo State’s strategic commitment to leveraging tourism as a catalyst for economic development, job creation, and cultural heritage preservation.

“Tourism remains a vital sector with the potential to create jobs, foster understanding, and drive sustainable growth. As an administration committed to diversification and prosperity, we will continue to support initiatives that promote our tourism assets, preserve our heritage, and attract global visitors to Ondo State,” Aiyedatiwa said.

The governor described the tourism sector as a “sleeping economic giant,” urging concrete measures to awaken its vast potential, a view widely echoed by industry stakeholders. He spotlighted Araromi Beach, a 180-kilometre stretch of unspoiled shoreline, as a future hotspot for tourism once the coastal highway project reaches completion.

“By the time the coastal road is completed, Araromi Beach will be a prime destination. It is only about 45 minutes from Lagos, and investors should act now before land prices soar,” he noted.

To truly unlock its tourism potential, Ondo State must focus on enhancing its key attractions. Idanre Hills, a UNESCO World Heritage site, demands significant attention. This means rehabilitating the iconic 640 steps, ensuring consistent power and water supply to accommodations and visitor centres, and upgrading access roads. To enrich the visitor experience, guided tours, interpretive centres detailing the history of sites like the Agbogun Footprint and Oduduwa Crown, and even cultural performances should be introduced.

In her remarks, NATOP President, Alhaja Bolaji Mustapha, expressed appreciation to the Ondo State Government for hosting the AGM in a location that reflects this year’s theme: Unlocking Nigeria’s Ecotourism Untapped Treasures.

She emphasised the role of tour operators in showcasing Nigeria’s rich natural and cultural assets, particularly at the grassroots level. “We have the responsibility and opportunity to spotlight these treasures, create economic value, and empower tourism entrepreneurs,” she said.

The AGM brought together key players in the tourism sector, including government officials, private investors, and tour operators, to discuss strategies for unlocking the nation’s vast ecotourism potential.
