Governor Otu Fuels Cross River's Tourism Revival with N18 Billion Investment

In a decisive effort to re-establish Cross River State as a leading tourism destination in Nigeria and West Africa, Governor Bassey Otu has announced a significant ₦18 billion investment in the state’s tourism sector.

This visionary investment, detailed in a statement from the governor’s office, is a cornerstone of Governor Otu’s “Season of Sweetness” agenda. It aims to revitalise the state’s most iconic tourism assets, enhance its infrastructure and superstructure, and refine its tourism products.

Key projects under this ambitious initiative include significant infrastructural upgrades to the world-famous Obudu Mountain Resort, Kwa Falls, Marina Resort, and the Tinapa Business and Leisure Resort

Also, the Amber Tinapa Hotel and Studio Tinapa are earmarked for comprehensive remodelling and rehabilitation, with the goal of re-establishing them as bustling hubs of leisure, hospitality, and creative enterprise.

To further enhance the state’s appeal, a new pier harbour will be constructed, opening up a wealth of waterfront tourism experiences and activities. The initiative also includes the launch of “Experience Calabar” tours and the creation of a dedicated Heritage Market for arts and crafts, both designed to showcase the state’s rich cultural legacy and heritage.

A crucial component of this strategic drive is the government’s investment in Axari Towers. This move is set to significantly increase the state’s bed capacity and guarantee the successful hosting of major events, especially as Cross River State prepares for the highly anticipated 20th Anniversary of the Christmas Festival & Carnival Calabar in December 2025. This comprehensive investment is expected to stimulate the local economy, create numerous jobs, attract global tourists, and deepen private sector involvement across the tourism and hospitality value chain. Governor Otu reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to transforming Cross River State into a globally competitive tourism destination, stating, “This is not just an investment in infrastructure; it is an investment in our people, our culture, and our future.”

Another strategic enhancement is the improvement of access to and from Cross River State. The state-owned airline, Cally Air, managed in partnership with Aero Contractors and ValueJet, will acquire two CRJ 1000 aeroplanes to complement its existing fleet of two Boeing 737s.

Furthermore, plans are well underway to upgrade and rehabilitate the Calabar International Convention Centre (CICC), a world-class conference and events facility, while the Calabar Cultural Centre is currently undergoing renovation. These efforts are geared towards positioning Cross River State as a premier conference and events destination. With these bold and multi-faceted steps, Cross River State is not merely preserving its tourism heritage; it is actively reimagining it for global relevance and long-term economic sustainability.

This monumental injection of funds directly addresses critical areas of tourism development, encompassing access, accommodation, activities, human capacity development, and community-based tourism, ensuring a holistic approach to growth and revitalisation.
